Birthing Ball, What Size Fits?

Birthing Balls

As Gok Wan would say I’m always ‘banging on’ about Birthing Balls. So what exactly is a birthing ball? A birthing ball is simply an exercise ball that can be used as an exercise tool during pregnancy, labour and afterwards.

Proper Use and Tips…

It’s very important to get a ball that is the correct size for your height and inflate it according to the included manufacturer’s directions.

What size birthing ball is right for me?

Use your height to give you a guide to the size of ball that will be right for you. Ideally, your knees should be about 10cm (4in) lower than your hips when you sit on it.

As a general rule:

  • 55 cm ball – if your height is under 5’4″
  • 65 cm ball – if your height is 5’4″ – 5’10″
  • 75 cm ball – if your over 5’10″in height

A birthing ball will take your weight, whatever your size. Good quality birthing and gym balls are pressure-tested and are made from anti-burst materials. They can generally support weights up to 300kg (about 47st). You may need to buy a pump and a ball stand. Ideally you should inflate your ball so that it’s firm, but gives a little when you press on it.

If you have a latex allergy, you will want to get one that is latex-free.
